United States: The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported a notable surge of 10 fresh cases of mpox over the past fortnight, a stark rise from the usual countywide average of fewer than two cases per week in preceding weeks.

Health authorities strongly advise vulnerable residents to take proactive measures.

Initial symptoms may resemble influenza, but the emergence of an inexplicable rash often alerts individuals to the possibility of mpox, previously known as monkeypox. Health officials have recently noted an increase.

“We recorded four cases approximately two weeks ago, followed by six cases last week,” stated Dr Sonali Kulkarni, overseeing the HIV and STD initiatives at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. “This trend indicates the onset of the summer season, a time when social interactions and sexual activities tend to increase,” according to abc7.com.

Normally, the county registers around one to two cases weekly. Mpox primarily spreads through close contact involving bodily fluids, lesions, shared bedding, or respiratory droplets transferred via kissing, coughing, sneezing, and even skin-to-skin contact.

“Wearing more covering attire at venues such as dance clubs and parties can help mitigate spread, as the virus can be transmitted through close physical contact,” explained Dr. Kulkarni. “Some individuals may harbor early mpox without realizing it, inadvertently facilitating its spread.”

Given the recent uptick in cases, the Department of Public Health advises individuals experiencing unusual sores resembling pimples or blisters, along with symptoms like fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, or swollen lymph nodes, to undergo testing.

Dr. Kulkarni emphasized that the mpox virus does not mutate as rapidly as influenza or COVID-19, thereby maintaining the efficacy of the existing two-dose vaccine regimen. High-risk demographics include men who have sex with men, as per abc7.com.

“Individuals of any gender or sexual orientation involved in commercial or transactional sex work are also at heightened risk,” she added.

Additionally, individuals living with HIV should remain vigilant.
